BioNews Sciences readers are patients an their caregivers, so our goal is to explain these studies in simple, everyday English that non-scientists can understand so they can be informed and play a more active role in their quality of care.
This role is open to freelancers worldwide, however, we are specifically looking for writers with Ph.D's in the life or natural sciences. Along with strong written English skills (American English preferred), some experience writing for the general public is an advantage, as well as availability to write two articles a day for us at least three times a week.
You'll be working with science and copy editors in completing the articles for publication.
Here's some of what you can expect to be doing as a writer for us:
Working with editors to make sure articles are complete and ready for online publication
Being alert to potential problems with an assignment or its scope (i.e., evidence that the therapy assigned is no longer in active development), and addressing those concerns to the assigning editor
Being alert to existing topics that need updating, or new therapies/topics possibly worthy of an article because of developments in diseases of relevance to BioNews; bring above to assigning editor’s notice
Searching for relevant and authoritative sources needed to complete an assignment well and providing links on relevant terms to those sources
Reworking or rewriting an article at the request of assigning editors, copy editors, or other editors
Your Goals in this role:
Consistent quality in writing assignments
Growing both in science knowledge and written English skills
Being sensitive to needs and sensibilities of BioNews patient and caregiver readers
Working independently and complete assignments within deadline
Working effectively with teams across BioNews Services’ platforms
PhD in life or natural science disciplines (cell biology, neurology, biochemistry, etc.); master’s degree in these disciplines may be considered with at least 3 years of prior professional medical writing experience; skilled in writing news articles off of clinical trials and published science studies.
Excellent communication (written and oral English) and time-management skills
Ability to produce accurate and detailed content on deadline
Strong organizational and analytical skills
Ability and willingness to work closely with editors to complete assignments of high quality, and to spot potential problems with an assignment and communicate them to editor(s)
Attention to detail, responsible, and reliable
Capable and driven to learn new skills or technologies, or upgrade existing skills, relevant to a health (medical) writer
Flexible and able to succeed in a self-directed, competitive, and changing work environment
Experience working in digital media a strong plus
