Eater is looking for a staff writer for its national site. This writer will be one of Eater's key voices in its day-to-day news and cultural coverage, from next-minute reactions to incisive second-day analysis, defining the voice and perspective of the brand on the biggest and most important news of the moment (and also the smallest and weirdest).
Eater is looking for a writer who is possessed of a singular voice, driven by intense curiosity, and meticulous nearly to a fault — who can write with intelligence, verve, irreverence, and humor about everything from the problem with Lucky Cricket to the insanity of the modern yogurt aisle to the mechanics of food halls and gentrification to why paper towels are the best napkins, all with a keen focus on a national audience of enthusiastic readers. This writer will write about news and culture within the food and restaurant space, but also food and restaurants within mass culture and wider world.
This writer will work closely with the incoming Daily Editor and the rest of the news team, writing an essay-driven mix of posts — or other unconventional formats! — as the news cycle, coverage, story angles, and creativity demand.
Our ideal candidate is a gifted writer with at least two years of experience in a daily news environment. We'd like to see a track record that demonstrates mastery of a variety of formats, from short blog posts to the 1500-word take and the ability to craft both profoundly felt arguments and electrifying sentences.
Experience in food media is not required, but a deep understanding of food and restaurant culture is.
